Pedestrians are mentally exhausted because they have to ignore all the madness that’s around them and get from one block to another without being run over by something with two legs or four wheels. In contrast, the environs of a park, can put you into a state of soft fascination, the aaaaah-inducing feeling of taking in the space around you. http://bit.ly/Zua33m

Best of luck for Festarch for their activities. Though we doubt they will need luck. So we rather wish them sunny weather!
publicdesignfestival:

The forth edition of Festarch starts tomorrow in Perugia (Italy). Until 10 June the festival by Abitare will focus on the theme of Cities within the city, those informal settlements self-created by its inhabitants that challange rational urban planning and move city boundaries. It will present a full programme of events including a talk with Giancarlo Mazzanti and Michael Maltzan about the role of public space.

Big cities have bustling corridors where saying “hello” would be out of place. But there are plenty of places, even within the most densely packed city, which lend themselves to neighborly acknowledgement: an apartment building, an office, a quieter residential street. After all, the feeling of connectedness is one of the benefits of living in a city. Let’s make sure to utilize it. It’s good for us.

fuckyeahpublicspace:

Created during the Bat-Yam International Biennale of landscape urbanism in Israël, the Cans Pavilion utilized that most under-utilized of spaces: an unocupied lot slated for future construction/development. An excerpt from their description:

The combination of “hospitality” and “public space” implies an inner tension. How can people identify with public space and relate to it as if it were their own living rooms?

We approach this question by fostering the participation of residents and visitors in the shaping of their environment, thus leaving their mark and presence on the space.
